Overview
Acne Spots
Acne is a common skin condition that affects 9.4% of the global population. It occurs when hair follicles become blocked by a combination of sebum (oil) and dead skin cells, leading to the development of whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. Although acne is most often associated with adolescence, it can affect individuals at any age, causing pain and distress and significantly impacting self-confidence.
There are typically four main types of acne:
- Blackheads: These occur when pores are clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells, but remain open at the surface.
- Whiteheads: Like blackheads, whiteheads form due to clogged sebum and debris, but the pore remains closed at the surface.
- Inflammatory Acne: Also known as acne vulgaris, this type involves bacteria in addition to a blocked pore, triggering an inflammatory immune response.
- Cystic Acne: The most difficult to treat and often leading to scarring, cystic acne involves painful cysts filled with pus and debris.
Some factors that can contribute to development of acne are:
- Hormonal changes, especially during puberty.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Hormonal imbalances during menstruation, pregnancy or conditions like PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).
- The use of certain cosmetic products that may clog pores or cause inflammation.
- Certain medications.
- Smoking, particularly in older individuals, which can exacerbate acne-related issues.
